1D. Punishment and kingdom blessing (chaps. 24-27)
A time of judgment
I. Behold, The Lord (24:1)
A. makes the earth empty
B. and makes it waste,
C. Distorts its surface
D. And scatters abroad its inhabitants.
E. And it shall be: (24:2)
1. As with the people,
a. so with the priest;
2. As with the servant,
a. so with his master;
3. As with the maid,
a. so with her mistress;
4. As with the lender,
a. so with the borrower;
5. As with the creditor,
a. so with the debtor.
F. The land shall be (24:3)
1. entirely emptied
2. and utterly plundered,
II. For the Lord has spoken this word.
A. The earth (24:4)
1. mourns
2. and fades away,
B. The world
1. languishes
2. and fades away,
C. The haughty people
1. of the earth
2. languish.
D. The earth is also defiled (24:5)
1. under its inhabitants,
2. Because they have
a. transgressed the laws,
b. Changed the ordinance,
c. Broken the everlasting covenant.
E. Therefore the curse has devoured (24:6)
1. the earth,
F. And those who dwell in it
1. are desolate.
G. Therefore
1. the inhabitants
a. of the earth
b. are burned
2. And few men
a. are left.
H. The new wine fails, (24:7)
1. the vine languishes,
I. All the merry-hearted sigh.
J. The mirth of the tambourine ceases, (24:8)
K. The noise of the jubilant ends.
L. The joy of the harp ceases.
M. They shall not drink wine (24:9)
1. with a song;
N. Strong drink is bitter
1. to those who drink it.
O. The city of confusion (24:10)
1. is broken down;
2. Every house is shut up,
a. so that none may go in.
P. There is a cry for wine (24:11)
1. in the streets,
Q. All joy is darkened,
R. The mirth of the land
1. is gone.
S. In the city (24:12)
1. desolation is left,
2. And the gate
a. is stricken
(1) with destruction.
T. When it shall be thus (24:13)
1. in the midst of the land
a. among the people,
U. It shall be
1. like the shaking of an olive tree,
2. Like the gleaning of grapes
a. when the vintage is done.
III. (24:14)
A. They shall lift up their voice,
B. they shall sing;
C. For the majesty of the Lord
1. They shall cry aloud
a. from the sea.
D. Therefore (24:15)
1. glorify
a. the Lord
(1) in the dawning light,
b. The name of the Lord God of Israel
(1) in the coastlands
(a) of the sea.
2. From the ends of the earth (24:16)
a. we have heard songs:
(1) Glory to the righteous!
IV. But I said,
A. I am
1. ruined,
2. ruined,
B. Woe to me!
V.
A. The treacherous dealers
1. have dealt treacherously,
B. Indeed,
C. the treacherous dealers
1. have dealt very treacherously.
D. (24:17)
1. Fear
2. and the pit
3. and the snare
E. Are upon you,
1. O inhabitant of the earth.
F. And it shall be (24:18)
1. That he who flees
a. from the noise
(1) of the fear
b. Shall fall into the pit,
2. And he who comes up
a. from the midst of the pit
b. Shall be caught
(1) in the snare;
G. For
1. the windows
a. from on high
b. are open,
2. And the foundations
a. of the earth
b. are shaken.
H. The earth (24:19)
1. is violently broken,
I. The earth
1. is split open,
J. The earth
1. is shaken exceedingly.
K. The earth (24:20)
1. shall reel
a. to
b. and fro
c. like a drunkard,
2. And shall totter
a. like a hut;
3. Its transgression
a. shall be heavy upon it,
4. And it
a. will fall,
b. and not rise again.
VI. It shall come to pass in that day (24:21)
A. That the Lord will punish
1. on high
a. the host
(1) of exalted ones,
2. And on the earth
a. the kings
(1) of the earth.
B. They will be gathered together, (24:22)
1. As prisoners
a. are gathered in the pit,
2. And will be shut up
a. in the prison;
3. After many days
a. they will be punished.
C. Then (24:23)
1. the moon
a. will be disgraced
2. And the sun
a. ashamed;
D. For the Lord of hosts
1. will reign
a. On Mount Zion
b. And in Jerusalem
2. And before
a. His elders,
(1) gloriously.
A time of blessing in the kingdom
VII. O Lord, (25:1)
A. You are my God.
B. I will exalt You,
C. I will praise Your name,
D. For
1. You have done
a. wonderful things;
2. Your counsels of old
a. are
(1) faithfulness
(2) and truth.
VIII. (25:2)
A. For
1. You have made
a. a city
(1) a ruin,
b. A fortified city
(1) a ruin,
c. A palace of foreigners
(1) to be a city
(a) no more;
(2) It will never be rebuilt.
B. Therefore (25:3)
1. the strong people
a. will glorify You;
2. The city of the terrible nations
a. will fear You.
C. For You have been (25:4)
1. a strength
a. to the poor,
2. A strength
a. to the needy
(1) in his distress,
3. A refuge
a. from the storm,
4. A shade
a. from the heat;
D. For the blast
1. of the terrible ones
2. is
a. as a storm
b. against the wall.
E. You will reduce the noise of aliens, (25:5)
1. As heat
a. in a dry place;
2. As heat
a. in the shadow
(1) of a cloud,
F. The song
1. of the terrible ones
2. will be diminished.
IX. And in this mountain (25:6)
A. The Lord of hosts will make for all people
1. A feast of choice pieces,
2. A feast of wines
a. on the lees,
3. Of fat things
a. full of marrow,
4. Of well-refined wines
a. on the lees,
B. And He will destroy on this mountain (25:7)
1. The surface of the covering
a. cast over all people,
2. And the veil
a. that is spread
b. over all nations.
C. He will swallow up (25:8)
1. death
2. forever,
D. And the Lord God
1. will wipe away tears
a. from all faces;
E. The rebuke of His people
1. He will take away
2. from all the earth;
F. For the Lord has spoken.
G. And it will be said in that day: (25:9)
1. Behold,
2. This is our God;
a. We have waited for Him,
b. and He will save us.
3. This is the Lord;
a. We have waited for Him;
b. We will
(1) be glad
(2) and rejoice
(a) in His salvation.
H. For on this mountain (25:10)
1. the hand of the Lord
a. will rest,
2. And Moab
a. shall be trampled down
b. under Him,
c. As straw
(1) is trampled down
(2) for the refuse heap,
d. And He will spread out His hands (25:11)
(1) in their midst
(2) As a swimmer
(a) reaches out to swim,
e. And He will bring down
(1) their pride
(2) together with the trickery
(a) of their hands.
f. The fortress (25:12)
(1) of the high fort
(a) of your walls
(2) He will bring down,
(a) lay low,
(3) And bring to the ground,
(a) down to the dust.
X. In that day (26:1)
A. this song will be sung in the land of Judah:
1. We have a strong city;
2. God will appoint salvation
a. for
(1) walls
(2) and bulwarks.
3. Open the gates, (26:2)
a. That the righteous nation
(1) which keeps the truth
(2) may enter in.
4. You will keep him (26:3)
a. in perfect peace,
b. Whose mind is stayed on You,
c. Because he trusts in You.
5. Trust in the Lord forever, (26:4)
6. For in Yah,
7. the Lord,
a. is everlasting strength,
8. For He brings down (26:5)
a. those who dwell
(1) on high,
b. The lofty city;
(1) He lays it low,
(2) He lays it low
(a) to the ground
(3) He brings it down
(a) to the dust.
(4) The foot (26:6)
(a) shall tread it down--
(b) The feet of the poor
(c) And the steps of the needy.
9. The way of the just (26:7)
a. is uprightness;
b. O Most Upright,
c. You weigh the path
(1) of the just.
10. Yes, in the way of Your judgments, (26:8)
a. O Lord,
b. we have waited for You;
c. The desire of our soul
(1) is for Your name
(2) And for the Remembrance of You.
d. With my soul (26:9)
(1) I have desired You
(a) in the night,
e. Yes, by my spirit within me
(1) I will seek You early;
11. For when Your judgments are in the earth
a. The inhabitants
(1) of the world
(2) will learn
(a) righteousness.
12. Let grace (26:10)
a. be shown
b. to the wicked,
13. Yet he will not learn righteousness;
a. In the land of uprightness
(1) he will deal unjustly,
(2) And will not behold
(a) the majesty
i) of the Lord.
14. Lord, (26:11)
a. when Your hand is lifted up,
(1) they will not see.
(2) But they will
(a) see
(b) and be ashamed
i) For their envy of people;
ii) Yes,
iii) the fire of Your enemies
a) shall devour them.
15. Lord, (26:12)
a. You will establish peace
(1) for us,
b. For You have also done
(1) all our works
(2) in us.
16. O Lord (26:13)
a. our God,
b. masters
(1) besides You
(2) Have had dominion
(a) over us;
c. But by You only
(1) we make mention
(2) of Your name.
d. They are dead, (26:14)
(1) they will not live;
e. They are deceased,
(1) they will not rise.
f. Therefore
(1) You have
(a) punished
(b) and destroyed
(c) them,
(d) And made all their memory
i) to perish.
g. You have (26:15)
(1) increased the nation,
(2) O Lord,
h. You have
(1) increased the nation;
i. You are
(1) glorified;
j. You have
(1) expanded all the borders
(2) of the land.
17. Lord, in trouble (26:16)
a. they have visited You,
b. They poured out a prayer
(1) when Your chastening
(a) was upon them.
18. As a woman with child (26:17)
a. is in pain
b. and cries out
(1) in her pangs,
c. When she draws near the time
(1) of her delivery,
d. So have we been in Your sight,
19. O lord,
a. We have been with child, (26:18)
b. we have been in pain;
c. We have,
(1) as it were,
(2) brought forth wind;
d. We have not
(1) accomplished any deliverance
(2) in the earth,
e. Nor have the inhabitants
(1) of the world fallen.
20. Your dead shall live; (26:19)
a. Together with
(1) my dead body
(2) they shall arise.
b. Awake
c. and sing,
(1) You who dwell in dust;
(2) For your dew
(a) is like the dew of herbs,
d. And the earth
(1) shall cast out the dead.
21. Come, (26:20)
a. my people,
(1) enter your chambers,
(2) And shut your doors
(a) behind you;
(3) Hide yourself,
(a) as it were,
(b) for a little moment,
(c) Until the indignation
i) is past.
22. For behold, (26:21)
a. the Lord comes out
(1) of His place
(2) To punish
(a) the inhabitants
i) of the earth
ii) for their iniquity;
b. The earth
(1) will also disclose her blood,
(2) and will no more cover her slain.
XI. In that day (27:1)
A. the Lord
1. with His severe sword,
a. great
b. and strong.
2. Will punish
a. Leviathan
(1) the fleeing serpent,
b. Leviathan
(1) that twisted serpent;
3. And He will slay
a. the reptile
(1) that is in the sea.
XII. In that day (27:2)
A. sing to her
1. A vineyard of red wine!
B. I, the Lord,
1. keep it, (27:3)
a. I water it every moment;
(1) lest any hurt it,
b. I keep it
(1) night
(2) and day,
2. Fury is not in Me. (27:4)
a. Who would set
(1) briers
(2) and thorns
(3) Against Me in battle?
b. I would go through them,
c. I would burn them together.
3. Or let him take hold (27:5)
a. of My strength,
4. That he may make peace
a. with Me;
5. And he shall make peace
a. with Me.
6. Those who come (27:6)
a. He shall cause
(1) to take root
(2) in Jacob;
b. Israel shall
(1) blossom
(2) and bud,
c. And fill the face of the world
(1) with fruit.
7. Has He struck Israel (27:7)
a. as He struck those
b. who struck him?
8. Or has He been slain
a. according to the slaughter
(1) of those
(2) who were slain by Him?
9. In measure (27:8)
a. by sending it away,
b. You contended with it.
c. He removes it
(1) by His rough wind
d. In the day
(1) of the east wind.
10. Therefore (27:9)
a. by this
(1) the iniquity of Jacob
(a) will be covered;
b. And this
(1) is all the fruit
(a) of taking away his sin:
c. When he makes all the stones
(1) of the altar
(2) Like chalkstones
(a) that are beaten to dust,
d. Wooden images
e. and incense altars
(1) shall not stand.
11. Yet the fortified city will be desolate, (27:10)
a. The habitation forsaken
b. and left like a wilderness;
(1) There, the calf
(a) will feed,
(2) and there it
(a) will lie down
(b) And consume its branches.
c. When its boughs are withered, (27:11)
(1) they will be broken off;
(2) The women
(a) come
(b) and set them on fire.
12. For it is a people
a. of no understanding;
13. Therefore
a. He who made them
b. will not have mercy
(1) on them,
c. And He who formed them
d. will show them no favor.
XIII. And it shall come to pass in that day (27:12)
A. That the Lord
1. will thresh,
a. From the channel of the River
b. To the Brook of Egypt;
2. And you will be gathered
a. one
b. by
c. one,
3. O you children of Israel.
XIV. So it shall be in that day: (27:13)
A. The great trumpet
1. will be blown;
B. They will come,
1. who are about to perish
a. in the land of Assyria,
2. And they who are outcasts
a. in the land of Egypt,
3. And shall worship the Lord
a. in the holy mount
b. at Jerusalem.
