The Knesset approved Wednesday evening the Evacuation Compensation bill, the key legislation underlying Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's disengagement plan, and one of the most controversial laws in the nation's history.
The long legislative procedure and its final results did not seem to shake the views of lawmakers.
Right-wing MK Zvi Hendel (National Union) dubbed the Evacuation and Compensation bill as the law of deportation and pillage. Hendel added that the Gush Katif settlements will not be uprooted, as only the people will decide in the matter of disengagement.
On the other end of the political map, MK Ran Cohen (Yahad) described the bill as an historical step that would bring closer brothers and nations.
The bill's third and final reading was approved with a comfortable 59 to 40 MK majority, and five MKs obstaining.
